The Testimony of John the Baptist
John 1:29-34
29. The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30. This is He on behalf of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’ 31. I did not recognize Him, but so that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing in water.” 32. John testified saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him. 33. I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’ 34. I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God.”
The narrative of the Testimony of John the Baptist corresponds to the Mula Bandha of the Indian tradition located at the base of the spine.
The Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven
John 1:32 – John testified saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him.”
In the Indian tradition the Prana (corresponding to the Spirit/Pneuma in the Gospel) is associated with a bird. Mula Bandha prevents the descending great bird of Prana in the form of Apana from escaping the lower body and draws it up to unite with Prana. This is symbolized in the Gospel of John by the dove descending from heaven and remaining on Jesus.
This Mula Bandha lock is said, when engaged, to arouse the dormant spiritual Kundalini energy. In the Gospel of John Jesus is associated with the Kundalini energy, raising up the spine in the body (the land of Palestine) and piercing each chakra (each associated with one of the miracles). This arousal of the spiritual Kundalini energy corresponds to the start of Jesus ministry in the land of Palestine.
Jesus Baptizing in the Holy Spirit
John 1:33 – ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’
Baptism is an act of cleansing. In the Jewish culture of the 1st century Palestine ritual washing in water and purity practices were common. John the Baptist was baptizing in water; now comes Jesus offering a different kind of baptism: baptism in the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit (Greek word Pneuma: πνευμα) in the Gospel of John corresponds to the Prana of the Indian tradition.
The Greek word Pneuma (πνευμα) means: a movement of air, the breath, the wind, the spirit.
The Sanskrit word Prana means: the breath of life, the breath, the life force, the wind, the spirit.
The Prana is the life force nourishing the body with pranic energy once the nadis of the subtle body have been purified. Jesus represents the Kundalini Shakti pervading the Prana. The control of Prana, using the technique of Pranayama, will eventually lead to the merging of the individual self with the Divine Consciousness (liberation/immortality).
Tirumantiram 694 – The way Prana (the breath/life force) mingles in Jiva (the individuated Self) is through Kundalini Shakti of the Tender Vine. Prana pervades the nadis and Kundalini Shakti pervades Prana entirely.
Tirumantiram 571 – Knowledge of Science of Breath (Pranayama) leads to immortality.
